The Pondaung Formation occurs in the Western Inner-Burman Tertiary Basin (interarc trough), whereas the Irrawaddy sediments are exposed in both basins; so far primate fossils have only been recovered from the latter formation in the Western Inner- Burman Tertiary Basin. The Pondaung Formation in the eastern Central Myanmar Basin. The Pondaung Range, which is over 200 miles long and rises t o a height of over 4,000 feet , is undoubtedly pre-Irraweddian, or may be even lower Tertiary, as in the Maw valley near Tilin, where deposits of gently dipping Maw gravels, a local facies of the Irrawaddiana, rest upon the upturned edges of the Lower Eocene with strong unconformity and discordance.
